Senator urges union support
Jersey States
The States is debating plans for spending until 2008
A senior politician has urged unions to work with the States in reducing the number of government employees in Jersey.

Senator Frank Walker said he was concerned about allegations the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) would not take part in talks aimed at cutting the number of civil servants.

The States is debating plans for spending until 2008, which includes reducing the number of people working for the government.

The Policy and Resources President said the only way to reduce civil servant numbers would be through dialogue with union representatives and employees.

'Very sad'

Senator Walker said he was concerned a major union was "walking away" from the process.

"I was very sad that already the T&G have said they are not prepared to co-operate and are walking away from it," he said.

"In total contrast, thankfully, to other union representatives who were present at a meeting last week."
