Volunteer first-aiders from the Channel Islands are lending their support to the 2003 Island Games in Guernsey.

The St John Ambulance Service is the Bailiwick is tackling its biggest ever operation providing cover for the Games.

More than 2,500 athletes and many hundreds of spectators are in the island, increasing the pressure on the emergency services.

So the charity has brought in 26 extra first aiders from the UK to make up a total team of 86 qualified personnel.

Challenging week

Four additional ambulances have also been shipped into the Bailiwick.

The island's service has never been involved with such a big operation before.

It will be providing cover at all the main events in all four islands, Guernsey, Alderney, Herm and Sark.

The Operations Commissioner, Dick Bush said it was going to be a "challenging" week, but he says they are looking forward to the challenge and has "every confidence" in his team.

The volunteers from St John are supporting the day-to-day duties of Guernsey's emergency services until the Games close on Friday.
