More than 2,500 athletes are taking part in the games

Guernsey got off to a good start on day one of the games, with a gold medal for cyclist Ann Bowditch in the opening event.

Sark also made its mark on the medals table with silver in the shooting.

Meanwhile, the Jersey team won three golds in the triathlon, a silver in the ladies' javelin and bronze in the mens' high-jump and another in the men's individual triathlon.

Emergency services

The staging of the games has been a major challenge for Guernsey's St John Ambulance Service.

The emergency services are coping with an influx of more than 2,500 athletes and many more spectators and have already dealt with more than 30 minor injuries and complaints.

Operations Commissioner Dick Bush says his service has brought in 26 extra first aiders from the UK. He said this total number of personnel should enable it to meet the demand if any medical problems arise.

Meanwhile, Jersey might consider a bid to stage the games in 2011.

Senator Mike Vibert, the president of Jersey's Education, Sport and Culture Committee has said Jersey could be in the running to host the once more.

The games were last held in the island in 1997.

Senator Vibert, who is visiting the 2003 Games in Guernsey, says any bid from Jersey would depend upon the interest of other islands in holding the event.
