The Island Games gets under way on Saturday |
Organisers of the 2003 Island Games in Guernsey have announced a break from tradition in their plans for the opening ceremony. The official opening on Saturday will be at the Victoria Marina in St Peter Port rather than at the Games' base at Beau Sejour.
The traditional Water Ceremony will see water from all 25 islands form the focus of the opening.
It will arrive at Victoria Marina aboard a flotilla of boats.
Giant screens
A specially-created fountain will mix together the water from each competing island, in the middle of the marina.
More than 2,000 athletes will then participate in a march past, led by the Games mascot, Daniel the Donkey.
The event will be free and pictures will be relayed live to spectators on two giant screens.
Visitors will be able to watch the ceremony from the Victoria Pier and the quay in front of town church.
Stuart Falla, chairman of the Island Games Organising Committee, says the evening is designed to run from 1845 to 2015, to allow the athletes to get plenty of sleep before the first day of competition.
