Toronto critics bow down to Queen
Dame Helen Mirren
Mirren has been tipped to win an Academy Award next year

Royal drama The Queen has been given five awards by the Toronto Film Critics Association, including a best actress award for Dame Helen Mirren.

Dame Helen's prize follows a string of other critics' awards as well as three Golden Globe nominations, putting her in a strong position for the Oscars.

Michael Sheen won best supporting actor for his role as Tony Blair in the film about the death of Princess Diana.

Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen was named best actor by the Canadian critics.

Smoking satire

The best supporting actress award, meanwhile, went to Cate Blanchett for her role as a disgraced schoolteacher in Notes on a Scandal.

Thank You For Smoking, a satire on the tobacco industry, was named best first feature, while penguin comedy Happy Feet took top honours in the animation category.

Peter Morgan took the screenplay award for The Queen, while Stephen Frears shared the director prize with Belgian siblings Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, recognised for their Palme d'Or winner L'Enfant.

L'Enfant - released as The Child in the UK - was named best foreign language film.
