 Helen Mirren stars in The Queen which lost out in five categories |
Actress Dame Helen Mirren has won a special prize at the British Independent Film Awards in London. But the 61-year-old failed to pick up the award for best actress for her titular role in The Queen, losing out to Katie Dickie in Red Road.
Tony Curran was also named best actor for his part in the film.
This Is England, about a group of skinheads, won best independent film, while actor Jim Broadbent was honoured with an outstanding contribution award.
Missed out
Thomas Turgoose, the 12-year-old who made his screen debut in the This Is England, won the most promising newcomer award.
The special jury prize went to filml director Ken Loach, whose most recent film was The Wind That Shakes The Barley.
The Queen, which was directed by Stephen Frears, missed out in five categories, but the movie did pick up the award for best screenplay.
The Last King of Scotland, a film about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin won two awards.
Kevin Macdonald, whose other work includes Touching the Void, took home the prizes for best director and the technical achievement award.
The award for best documentary went to The Road to Guantanamo, which told the story of three British Muslims who were held at the detention camp for two years and then released without charge.
