| Friday, 16 August, 2002, 00:20 GMT 01:20 UK UN to increase Angola presence ![]() Civil war forced many Angolans to flee their homes The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to boost the UN's presence in Angola following the end of the civil war between the Angolan Government and the Unita rebel movement.
With the Council's support, a special representative of the Secretary General will be appointed to co-ordinate the new UN mission in Angola. Extra UN military officers will be employed to liaise between Angolan army officers and military officials from the Unita rebel movement. Promoting reconciliation Part of their work will be to ensure that demobilisation proceeds smoothly and that conditions in demobilisation camps are improved. Political officers will be appointed to strengthen the UN's relationship with the Angolan Government and more UN human rights workers will be employed to promote national reconciliation. The workers will also protect the hundreds of thousands of Angolans who were forced to flee their homes during the war years. The Angolan Government, which has had a troubled relationship with the UN over the years, initially opposed the immediate implementation of these new proposals. Angolan officials feared that an enhanced UN presence might benefit the remnants of the Unita rebel movement at a time when the government is keen to see its complete demise. |
