Easter in JA
Robbo at Asylum
Robbo Ranx's runnins
23 March 05

After rocking club Asylum last night till 5 in the morning my Tuesday night was still going strong when my Wednesday should have been beginning! It was all about ignoring the rising sun and getting about some serious sleep back at the hotel. Surprisingly I woke up earlier than expected, just in time to catch breakfast.

So out we went again, looking to meet more artists in Jamaica. Our first stop was my favourite studio and a place I always feel at home - Bobby Digital's. Bobby's is always a good way to start your day as you never know who's going to be around.

Today was no exception as I bumped into a fresh talent not from Kingston but my ends, North London NW10 - the UK's Chukki Starr. Chukki told me he's in Jamaica to record his brand new album and it was great to see a UK artist taking the initiative to fly out to the rock and work with the toppa-top producers.

It was another hot day in Kingston and I think everyone must have been running at half speed - well the DJs were anyway!

We had a tip that legendary radio DJ Mighty Mike was in the area - known for being the first to play artists such as Fifth Element and I Wayne on the radio. We tried to track him down for over 2 hours, ending up at Fifth Element headquarters but alas couldn't find him. Sometimes these artists and DJs can be real elusive.

As we'd spent Tuesday talking to artists about the resurgence of conscious reggae, our mission for Wednesday was to get a different perspective. We made our way up to Beverly Hills, Kingston to talk to Carolyn Cooper - Professor of Literal & Cultural Studies at the University of the West Indies.

When it comes to reggae music and culture Carolyn has so much knowledge. We could have talked to her all day. She explained to us that her University actually has reggae classes (why couldn't I have taken that instead of home economics)!! It was such an interesting interview. We came away from it with much better insight into the current popularity of certain types of music. You can catch it next week on our special Monday show dedicated to one drop reggae. We did the interview on the porch of Ms Cooper's home and the view of Kingston from her house was amazing. What a sweet end to a tiring day.

It was already 6 oclock so I went back to hotel to rest for tonight. The return of Stone Love's Weddy Weddy Wednesday - the weekly party they have in thier own drive way! Can't wait to see who turns up. I'm taking some fresh dubplates just in case... Would be nice to drop some bombs 1Xtra style!
