Graham Anderson, 48, a retired soldier from Edinburgh, said in 1982 Lloyds refused to let him take out an account because he was a soldier.

He said: "So if they were to take over HBOS then I would remove my account from them.

"I have always liked HBOS as its staff are nice, friendly and accessible so I would stay with them without Lloyds."
