The improvement in agricultural productivity has had an immediate impact. The surplus produced has freed up children who once worked on the fields to go to school.
It has also had an economic impact, allowing some Sauri farmers to employ labourers, like this boy, who is cutting up plants to feed to livestock. The boy, an orphan, earns only a few Kenyan shillings a day, but with this he is able to care for his brothers and sisters.
His employer, Mama Monica Oketch, says she is teaching the new techniques to other farmers.
