Jodi police stage roadblock
Police staged roadblocks
Police questioned 800 drivers two weeks ago
Police investigating the murder of Jodi Jones have spoken to more than 500 people at roadblocks near her home.

Drivers were stopped between 1630 and 1830 BST on Monday at Easthouses on the outskirts of Dalkeith in Midlothian.

The police operation took place three weeks after the teenager's body was found.

Officers set up the roadblocks close to Jodi's home in an attempt to trace anyone who saw the teenager on the night she was killed.

About 800 drivers were questioned in a similar police operation two weeks ago.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said: "Lots of people may have been on holiday when motorists were questioned two weeks ago so we hoped to find people just back from abroad.

Alarm raised

"Not including drivers already questioned two weeks ago, we spoke to between 500 and 600 new people.

"Officers are now assessing the information gathered from tonight's operation."

Jodi had left her family home at about 1700 BST on 30 June to walk to her boyfriend's house.

The alarm was raised later when the 14-year-old failed to get there or return home.

Her body was found on the Roman Dyke path on the outskirts of Dalkeith.

On Sunday, police said that a knife found by a member of the public was not the murder weapon.

The discovery was made about 400 yards from the path where Jodi was found.

However, police inquiries established that the knife, which was handed in to officers on Saturday, had been in a garden hedge since the beginning of June.

The person who put it there did not appear to be connected to the case, the force said on Sunday.

The previous day detectives said that a man seen in the area on the night of a reconstruction of Jodi's final movements had been eliminated from inquiries.

Ruled out

Two witnesses came forward last week to say they had seen someone fitting Jodi's description on the night she died.

Both spoke of seeing a man walking behind the teenager.

One of the witnesses thought he saw the same man on the night of the reconstruction a week later.

Lothian and Borders Police said this man had come forward after an appeal and been ruled out because he was in England at the time of the killing.
