Watch: Largest solar flare in seven years erupts from Sun

The largest solar flare of this solar cycle - an X9-class flare - has been emitted by the Sun.

On Thursday, Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the X9.0 burst on its camera that constantly monitors the Sun.

This is the largest since September 2017 when two flares measuring X13.3 and X11.8 were observed.

The flare supercharges activity on the Sun with Coronal Mass Ejections sending charged particles to Earth which interact with our magnetosphere, creating the aurora.

The Northern Lights may be visible - cloud permitting - in the UK in the coming nights.
