It's not always easy for grandparents to know how best to help their grandchildren learn, as they don't always get as much advice and practise in as parents.
However, there are simple ways to boost your confidence in play, as speech and language therapist Nicola Lathey explains in the video below.
Being a grandparent isn't always easy. I'm sure there'll be a few wobbles along the way, but so long as you're having fun together and your interactions with your grandchild are really positive you can be sure that they're going to be learning loads of language and loving experimenting with new words.
A grandparent will be interested in different things to a parent.
So try and get your grandchild interested in everything.
How can I play confidently with my grandchild?
- Try to introduce them to the things that interest you, like your hobbies.
- Follow their lead as you play with them, talking about all the things they take notice of and do.
- Give them plenty of positive interaction and eye contact as you talk and play.
- Share family photographs with them and talk to them about the things they see in them.
