Just as they're learning about the world around them, your grandchild's emotions and feelings will be developing as they grow too.
How can you support them in their wellbeing as they make sense of their emotions?
Speech and language therapist Nicola Lathey offers her tips in the video below.
You'll know yourself just by the fun that you have with your grandchild, that the benefits are huge.
One of the things is building their emotional intelligence and therefore impacting on their well-being. The fun and the love and the bonding, that wonderful attachment that you can have with your grandchild. It's absolutely unbelievably important to that child's emotional development. Cuddles and good fun for all.
So you, as the grandparent encouraging your grandchild to be interested in new skills would be really good for expanding their language and learning new words.
The importance of grandparents to children's emotional development
As a grandparent, you can have a huge impact on your grandchild's emotional development through the fun, cuddles and play that you have with them.
Each day they are looking to the adults in their life to help them to learn and to make sense of what they feel as well as what they see, hear and touch.
So offer plenty of encouragement and help them along the way with the words they need to understand it all.
