Tidemark has some new company members this year who haven't experienced the joys of the Edinburgh Fringe before.

And because effective leafleting is a key part of our sales strategy, we held a tutorial for the new chaps on how and who not to leaflet.

    The key points are:

    • Don't bother to leaflet anyone carrying a guidebook entitled L'Ecosse or Grande Bretagne or similar. This is because they may be foreign tourists and only in Edinburgh for the Castle, the Military Tattoo and the whisky.
    • Same applies to person carrying a copy of La Figaro or Das Weld or similar.
    • Same applies to couples wearing matching anoraks, beige shorts, white socks and trainers.
    • Definitely don't attempt to leaflet locals who refuse to catch your eye as you approach them.
    • Go out of your way to avoid pin-striped business looking people and anyone wearing a wig and gown.
    • Under no circumstances attempt to leaflet a police officer. It may seem like a funny thing to do but if you are unlucky enough to be the 89th person that day to think it funny, you could end up hand-cuffed to one of them.
    • And definitely don't bother trying to hand a leaflet to Scots Pipers. They haven't got any spare hands. It's amazing how many such musicians are devoid of a sense of humour.
    • Always be polite. If someone refuses a leaflet simply say 'Thank you' and walk away. Under no circumstances swear at them.

At the end of the day, leafleting can be extremely hard work and at times unpleasant for both the person leafleting and the person being leafleted but it's an essential part of the Fringe experience.

It can also be very satisfying, especially when you take the time to sell your show well and as a result you later see at least a few of the people that you have leafleted actually turn up in the audience!

Rebecca will be reporting on Tidemark's experiences throughout this year's Festival. Come back to see how she's doing!
