It's a tough assignment for BBC Three Counties Radio Milton Keynes Breakfast presenter Toby Friedner, who has used thousands of chat-up lines in his relatively short life - most of them failing miserably. Looking for Love - the second programme in the new landmark Sense of Place series - looks to see if romance is alive and well in the new town of Milton Keynes. But Toby does not seem to have much joy: "Can I buy you a drink," he asks one young lady hopefully. She replies: "I'd rather have the money!" In the early days, MK was planned around families, something known as the Parker Morris Standard. What has happened since is that countless families have broken up and many people live a single life, not necessarily through choice. It is not easy to meet the man or woman of your dreams. Toby follows the fortunes of Bridget, a lovelorn middle-aged woman looking for Mr Right. She's got her own house, her own teeth and an ex-husband, and has found a new lease of life through a singles club she attends regularly. The programme hears how she progresses, discarding the cads, snakes and two timers along the way. With a commentary from Milton Keynes-based Susan Quilliam, one of Britain's leading local agony aunts, the programme also looks at what it is like to be gay. |
