KS2 History: Life in Tudor times - 2. Henry VIII

Who was Henry VIII and why did he marry six times?

2. Henry VIII

Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) is perhaps the most famous of all kings of England. Henry wasn't initially the heir to the throne, but when his elder brother - Arthur - died in 1502, Henry became next in line. Henry became king on the death of his father - Henry VII (1457 - 1509).

Henry's first wife was Katherine of Aragon (1485 - 1536), who had also briefly been married to Henry's elder brother, Arthur, prior to his death. The only surviving child of Henry and Katherine was a girl called Mary, the future Mary I (1516 - 1558). As the years passed, Henry became desperate for a male heir. The question of the succession became so acute for Henry that he first sought an annulment of his marriage from the Pope and then established the Church of England when the Pope would not agree to his wishes.

Henry was now free to divorce Katherine and marry Anne Boleyn (c 1500 - 1536). Anne gave birth to the future Elizabeth I (1533 - 1603) but did not give Henry the son he so desperately wanted. Henry accused Anne of treason and she was executed.

By the time of Anne's death, Henry had already turned his attention to Jane Seymour (c 1508 - 1537). Jane gave birth to a male heir - the future Edward VI (1537 - 1553) - but died shortly after.

Henry's subsequent three wives were Anne of Cleves: married 1540, divorced 1540; Catherine Howard: married 1540, beheaded 1542; Catherine Parr: married 1543, survived. On Henry's death in 1547 his son became Edward VI.
