Switch Investigates:

We searched the net, spoke to tribes and hung out with them: all to find out what it would be like to be… one of them?

Here's what we found out: -

If I were a... Techie

What would I wear?

  • Often seen in T-shirts with computing-related slogans such as 'I Google Myself Regularly' and 'I love Widgets'.
  • I prefer to dress casually and never make any bold fashion statements with my dress style.
  • When I'm out to impress, a shirt over a t-shirt looks quite smart.
  • For trousers: jeans, jeans and more jeans.
  • If of the production and theatre variety of a techie, anything black is the desired dress code.

What about music?

  • I listen to anything that's easily downloadable.
  • I like alternative music… whether it's in or out of fashion. I like real music.
  • As my music habits change, so do I.
  • I like to listen to my music on my iPod, Mp3 Player, Mobile phone, Satellite and Cable systems, through Windows Media Player/Real Player/ iTunes and online streaming.
  • What's a CD player?

What do I do?

  • I go online. A lot
  • LAN parties rock my cyber-world.
  • I like to play state of the art computer games. My favourite at the moment is HALO: 3.
  • Oh… and I'll always love my MMORPGs (Mass-multi-player-online-role-playing-games)
  • I keep up to date with all the best graphic novels (they're comic books to you non-techies).
  • Not everything I do has to revolve around gadgetry though… sometimes a coffee or a milkshake out with mates can beat battling baddies in war games.

What do I think?

  • A Mac has far superior system process threading and multiple user handling than a PC due to its UNIX kernel based operating system.
  • Techies tend to go against the norm… trouble is, going against the norm is now normal.
  • Even though sometimes I like to cut myself off from the world, there's nothing more fulfilling than solving my family and friends' computer crises.
