Sheer class attack

It’s boring to have to say this but the Co-op Juniors have done it again! Hot on the heels of their success with Les Miserables, they nailed We Will Rock You on its opening night at Ipswich's Corn Exchange.

Having seen the West End production of We Will Rock You three times, I wasn't sure how this schools version would come across. I needn't have worried - it was fantastic.

"We're really lucky that the long-standing traditions of the Co-op Juniors have developed such a wealth of talent over the years."

Linda Finbow

The song We Will Rock You gets the audience arms waving while These Are The Days Of Our Lives was quite moving.

The script is exactly the same as the West End version with all the innuendo and the like. The sell-out audience were simply blown away by the quality of the performance in general, but by the main actors in particular and of course it was wall-to-wall with Queen songs.

The lead of Galileo is being shared by two actors, Oliver Brett and Jonathan Bingham, the latter performing on the opening night.

Scaramouche was played by Lucy Allen, the cheeky and altogether bolshie young girl who, despite her reluctance, falls in love with Galileo. It was an exceptional portrayal. The sarcasm and street-wise banter were exactly as we remembered the London show – well done Lucy!

Champions

Similarly, the part of Britney is being shared by Peter Hazelwood and Luke Cattermole (Luke opening) and if the other two male leads are anything like as good as the guys we saw, then the Co-op Juniors are truly blessed with a depth of talent.

Killer Queen, Kashoggi, Pop and Meat were also played at a very high level of competence for an amateur show. We're really lucky in Suffolk that the long-standing traditions of the Co-op Juniors have developed such a wealth of talent over the years.

The music of Queen has always been inspiring, but we should not underestimate the work that must have been put into producing a show of this calibre.

We Will Rock You runs at the Ipswich Corn Exchange until Sunday 24 June. The box office is 01473 433100. Felixstowe's Spa Pavilion is staging a schools version of We Will Rock You in the summer. BBC Suffolk is supporting both productions of We Will Rock You.
