Van Morrison

Van Morrison

Can Van The Man satisfy super fan?

Van Morrison headed to Suffolk for an outdoor show at Thetford Forest - but would his performance live up to our super fan reviewer's expectations?

There are certain songs that when you hear them, you could almost believe you were living in a film; they make a soundtrack to your life; the songs of Van Morrison must accompany many such life scenes.

Driving through Thetford Forest on a summer's evening listening to And It Stoned Me, I thought to myself, 'This film of my life isn't at all bad.'

Dream better than reality

Later on, watching one of popular music's great all-rounders perform just 20 feet away, I couldn't help thinking that, as ever, the dream was better than the reality.

Van Morrison

Van Morrison, by Claire Borley

In fairness to the great man, his vocal cords have not seized up like Dylan's - he is still the owner of a powerful, at times unintelligible, tenor. And he's one of the few musicians who can pick up a saxophone without sounding schmaltzy.

But it feels at times as though I'm watching The World's Most Accomplished Wedding Singer, and were it not for the fact that the singer wrote most of the classic songs, the band would be unexceptional.

Half Vegas glitz, half Social Club naff, the roughness and world-weariness you'd expect from a soul man's backing band is sorely lacking.

Van The Man himself, wearing shades, a straw bowler and a creased suit, is more like Hannibal Lecter than a pop icon: dispassionate, objective, detached.

Where is the love?

Safe standards like Wonderful Remark, Moondance and Bright Side Of The Road are given up skilfully, but not lovingly.

More dynamic numbers like Jackie Wilson Said and Domino also lack conviction.

One gets the impression of a man who's grown tired of his back catalogue and is going through the motions.

The one saving grace is: the canon is so strong, hearing it sung live and in person is just reward enough.

But for a few hundred hardcore fans at the front, the audience - most of whom have descended from Middle England - is sitting on the same green camping chair, and is politely appreciative, but never wild; the lack of enthusiasm seems to irk Van somewhat (pot, kettle, black, anyone?).

As usual His Irksomeness doesn't play an encore, finishing effortlessly on Brown-Eyed Girl: a stock classic that's become tedious through DJs' lack of imagination - it fails to satisfy the taste for danger.

On the night the weather is pleasantly mild, the performers disappointingly dreary and the music frustratingly tame. What's that saying about how you should never meet your heroes?

Have Your Say

Is Simon being too harsh? Or did Van the Man fail to impress you too?

I disagree - I got what I expected...maybe others were expecting more? I got good value MOR stuff from an expert and it was great to hear some of the tracks live. His warm up was excellent - three cheers for Edwina Hayes!!(Thumbs down for those who were yelling 'sit down' to us lot standing! If you want to have a picnic with music - take your radio to the beach! This was an outdoor concert for heavens sake!)

Simon is spot on, what a poor show, he needs to give up live shows as people paid good money for about an hour and a half of songs that had changed for the worse. The best part was watching some guy fall over 2 of the many green chairs. The one thing i would do differently for one of vans concerts is take a chair to sleep in.

I agree, have seen Van a few times now and he is getting less and less interactive, as if he is going through the motions, as are the audience. The band are fine but he is who I went to see and again felt a little disappointed, could do better!!

Saw "Van the has been" last year at Maidstone Castle & was so disappointed I rushed not to buy a ticket for Thetford this year!! Without a doubt the worst all round performance I've had the mispleaseure to witness.

i must agree with simon,i have been a fan of vans for over 35yrs.over the past 2yrs his new band fails to impress adding to the frustrastin of the fans.come on van ditch ditch this bunch of lossers and get back to what you do best.

I was unimpressed with Van the Man he didn't talk to the crowd, he just came on stage, sang his songs and cleared off. Not even an encore or thanks for coming. I enjoyed the support band and picnic more. Thoroughly disappointed and not value for money!

it was a good job that we had good company and nice weather as van the man was very dissapointing. It was as if he wanted to be somewhere else, arriving on stage and going through song after song without a word to the audience. He also changed (with the exception of brown eyed girl) all of the well known songs virtually beyond recognition. His one and only interaction with the audience was to say "thankyou" after brown eyed girl then he left the stage... some still called for an encore- but he was long gone ! good band, bad van !

Well thats the trouble with fantasising isnt it! we build this perfect vision in our head and cut out the negative grey reality sometimes..our heroes are frozen into some freeze frame of a good youthful memory years ago. we go to gigs today expecting to relive that feeling over...some deliver some dont..I always though Van morrison over rated but when I've accidently heard his songs in relaxed environments or romantic encounters I've thought him perfect. as for going to watch him live it kinda destroys the image for me..the recordings are better!
