March 12,2006.-- In the early 40's, Mother used to sing an old song about a little girl whose Mother had died.
The girl was looking for her grave in the cemetery-"Szla dziewczynka szypkiem kropem" to tell her Mother that-'nowa mama jesc nie daje, tylko suchy chleb, tylko suchy chleb."
It's been along time since I thought of that song & because my mother also died, there's no one else in the family that knows the rest of the words. I'm hoping that perphaps someone in this region might know the words. Ever hopeful--

Hi Carolyn Your father and grandfathers experiences were not uncommon however I suspect your dates might be a little confused although I would not presume to know your families history or circumstances.
Between 1940 and 1941 the Soviet Union deported some 1.5 million Poles to Siberia, many of whom did not return. Those that did, did so by the route your father took. These people lost everything and there was never any question of reparations due to the fact that at the end of the war, the Soviet Union was an ally that had sacrifised a great deal.
Therefore it would have been,shall we say, rude to excuse this great ally of attempted genocide. Anyway, there is plenty of information out there and I would suggest starting with: http://www.aforgottenodyssey.com/ This is a wealth of information and links which should help you enormously. Also - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kresy-Siberia/ This is a Yahoo group of deportee's and their decendents, however this doesn't refer to the Belorus region, it's more to do with those deported from what is now the Ukraine. I believe there is a similar group for Belorus deportee's and somebody there could probably point you in the right direction.

Cycle Ride to Warsaw
I thought you would like to know about a very special cycle ride that Marie Curie Cancer Care we are organising in September (9th – 15th) this year. We are a major UK cancer charity with an obvious connection to Warsaw.
In 2004 we had 80 cyclists ride from Krakow to Warsaw raising money for our Hospices in the UK. This was so successful that we have organised an even larger event for 2006. ‘The Great 500 Cycle Challenge’. Will involve 500 cyclists riding from 5 different cities – Krakow, Gdansk, Prague, Berlin and Vilnius – all arriving in Warsaw at the same time.
It is the largest event of its type ever undertaken by a UK charity and it has attracted considerable press attention in the UK. We have already recruited over 350 of the riders but are looking to have all 500 signed up by April.
We thought that this event might be of particular interest to the Polish community, particularly the Gdansk route which may have specific significance to many. Love your site re Poles in Staffordshire.
My interest is that my father is polish. His father was arrested by Stalinists 1n 1938 and never heard of again. Their land and property was confiscated and my father had to escape via Siberia he joined the Polish army and then in the middle east joined the RAF. This is how he ended up in Manchester.
When the allies ceded eastern Poland to Russia many Poles were unable to return home. Over the years Jewish groups have had a voice and received reparation from Germany but I can find no similar voice for the Polish people who lost family and property in what is now Belorus.
Any chance of you finding out if anything can be done to raise the profile of what is an elderly group of brave people? . Over the years I have written to Mp’s but got nowhere.

To Hayley Trow re documentary on Poles
Hi Hayley, I am doing reminisnce work with a Pole from Lodz who was in Polish army, 2nd corps, out in Italy in WW2 and then became a miner in Yorkshire. He has interesting things to say about the discriminatory way he was treated as an Alien, over here, when he felt he had fought as 'one of us' and should be treated as such I think he'd be prepared to be interviewed. PBF Sell Out in Balham
I have just found this site and I wanted to add my views and let as many people know what is happening in Balham Klub London.
The Club over the years had started to decline. A group of younger local mlodziez put forward proposals on keeping the klub to continue to be run for the community by a seperate body with good intentions and profits to be ploughed back into parafia.
PBF and Rektor in their wisdom handed it into private hands to do what they wanted as a business venture.
A year down the line, Balham Klub is a mess, it no longer serves the parafia but caters for 'Najgorsze hooligani z Polski'
The police are called to the club as there is always trouble, there are wet T-shirt competitions and the state of the club is disgusting.
The local Polish community are so upset that this has happened and is happening and the people and their families who had paid for this club no longer feel welcome and are extremely upset because they have lost their focal polish club to a greedy businesss venture agreed by PBF.

Re Jan Kowalski from Manchester
Jan Kowalski's sweeping assertion branding all recent Polish immigrants to Britain as dishonest, corrupt and simply evil is not only misleading but also a downright lie.
He obviously has not met any of these new arrivals, nor read in the British press the favourable comments about them. If he had taken the trouble to do so, he would know that there are thousands of competent Polish doctors, nurses, dentists, teachers and other professionals working here already, as well as many skilled and unskilled workers-farm labourers, builders, plumbers, waiters, aupairs etc, etc. Each and all regarded as valuedx as honest, hard working and reliable employees. A credit to Britain and of course their own country, Poland.

Help with Polish Children in our school

"Poles in Britain" 1980's tv documentary
I am trying to trace a copy of the above. One programme covered my fathers life in britain. He came to Britain in 1947, was de-mobbed near Cardiff and married a welsh girl. He worked in the welsh coal mines, loved music, played the accordian, and renovated and lived in an old cottage in wales. He died in 1993. The family has lost a recording of the tv programme and are desperate to get a copy of the documentary to show his grandchidren

Tadeusz is not simply an endearment. My father's name was Tadeusz. He was often called Ted by his English speaking friends and colleagues. Polish people would call him Tadzik or Tadzio.

POLISH NICKNAMES
Tadeusz is NOT a nickname. It is a normal name. Look up Thaddeus in the List of Saints named within the Eucharisctic Prayer Number I of the Roman Catholic Church. If you match that with the Polish translation of Eucharistic Prayer I, or with the original Latin of Eucharistic Prayer I, you will find what you are looking for. Also look up the very famous polish citizen Tadeusz Kosciuszko. "Ed" is short for the Polish name Edward, which in English happens to also be "Edward".

Poles of today
I can not believe the comments made about the Poles of today.
We have found releatives of my late Fathers in Poland and have visited each other recently. All I can say is good about the Polish people. They are extremely hard working, very polite and hospitable. They are also very intelligent and believe greatly in the merit of learning all they can to help them in life. It is a great pity that more of our fellow countrymen are not of the same ilk.

Nottingham/Derby would like Polish Lessons
I would like to learn polish, I have started and am getting on well, but would like to improve.
I live in Nottingham but also near to Derby.
I know that Nottingham has a Polish Club with a school, but they have not replied to any of my letters or phone calls for help.
I kwow there is a club in Derby, but cannot find the contact details. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Anyone want to link with Polish school?
We have been contacted by a Catholic school in Poland that wishes to set up links with an English school. Unfortunately we are busy developing links with a school in Italy at the moment.

Polish Lessons
I live in Bicester near Oxford and am interested in learning Polish. My husband's parents are Polish and I have made many Polish friends through this family connection. I would love to be able to converse with them when we visit.
However I have looked into Polish lessons and cannot find any outside of London. Maybe someone can help me find a teacher in the Oxford area.

Searching for Polish twin friends of my Father
I am looking to find two twin friends of my late father Wojciech Wojchiechowski if anyone can help. One lived in Nottingham and one in london. They came to visit us in 1964 approx and brought my Fathers stepmother also. If anyone can help locate them I would be extremely grateful.

Polish names - help!
Hello! I was wondering if you could help me! I have a question about Polish names/nicknames. My husband and I recently joyously welcomed into the world our first son - we named him Theodore. My mother in law told us that his name in Polish is Tadeusz.
Everything I've found on the internet says that his name, Theodore, is translated as Teodor, although it said that Tadeusz often nicknamed "Ted" as is Theodore. When I told this to the family, it kind of ruffled some feathers...
Her brother (my husban'ds uncle) sent me an email saying that: "Tadeusz in polish is simply an endearment and has the same relation to Theodore as Jack to John. Edeusz, is equally an endearment for any of the Ed variations, Edmund--Edward. these endearments are most never used literally. The endearments would only be used by the family and close friends. These are nicknames expressing familiarity and love. I am proud of mine." (His name is Edmund)
I don't speak Polish or have immediate Polish family ties, so I don't know if this is a common way to shorten a male name. I couldn't even find "Edeusz" with an internet search, so maybe it was just a family thing? Is Theodore (or Teodor) called "Tadeusz" in Polish as an endearment as he suggested? I might be in a battle of pride, but I DO want to know what to put in the baby book! haha Thank you in advance for clearing up this mystery! Sherry

When was the last time, he visited Poland? I was there recently. the Poles of today are just like the Poles of my fathers era, hard working, very polite and extremely intelligent. They have not forgotten how there forefathers died for them through the nazi's nor the communist regime. The Poland of today is full of statues and war memorials, erected and paid for by the young Poles of today, in rememberance of thier country past.

Today's Poland
Good solid advice..... Be very warry of today's Polish people from Poland. 50 years of communisim has bred minds that are dishonest, corrupt and simply evil.
The Poles who emigrated to all corners of the world after WWII were honest hard working patriotic , very decent people.
On the other hand, those who lived under communisim ... Don't trust the recent Polish immigrants ...just bad news.

PBFcontinue to disregard the needs of the beneficiaries
I write a a thoroughly disgusted beneficiary of the PBF.
Last Saturday I had occassion to take my niece to Polish school at the OSRODEK in Nottingham.
PBF have deemed that privitisation is the so called way forward. I would personally like to question is this morally justified in light of what is now happening to the buildings??? They have now effectively become a glorfied watering hole for roughnecks less than twenty-five metres from our church which has always been our pride and joy. The sight which I saw last Saturday was totally appalling,broken glass strewned in all sorts of places and excess amounts of vomit everywhere which the children had to be exposed to. As there was obviously a health and safety issue I promptly took my niece home.
This privitisation clearly demonstrates the detrimental effect it has had towards the beneficiares of Nottingham.The community is now effectively locked out of the premises which they solely funded independantly so many years ago and in their blindeness of trust vested the buildings in the PBF. This privitisation has cost the community dearly which is clearly demonstrated in the financial accounts which were presented at the AGM at the end of June.
As an old Polish saying goes 'It is easy to be generous with other peoples money' The Nottingham community is now on the knife edge of total distruction. the community as it stands could be in financial ruin within the next twelve to fourteen months and alas it appears that we too will become another Longdon. Is it small wonder that there was no-one stupid enough take on positions on the LMA. there has been no benefit to the beneficiaries of Nottingham and private enterprise cannot go hand in hand with charitable objectives.
The time has come that resignation is the only honourable way out, so that once again we can continue to be able to celebrate our rich culture and heritage in buildings which our forefathers funded through their hard work and dedication and which were to be enjoyed by future generations of true Poles.

fathers family
researching my fathers family,
jozef wojciechowski he was born in 1919 in jalowka bialystok. his parents were anna and jan,he said he had brothers and at least one sister called either leila or lidia.
also he mentioned being in a mine in russia then making his way through the middle east to britain. he joined the polish grenediers in march 1941 according to his papers and fought at tobruk. when he came to britain he trained as a paratrooper and served in arnhem with the 1st polish independent brigade,under general sosbowski.
he was in a few camps in britain before settling in forres morayshire scotland until his death in 1994. any help would be much appreciated

assistants & support from the polish community in manchester
i have recently made a new friend who is polish. my friend does not known anyone in manchester and she need to find any organisation or charites, who can point us in the right direction for assistants and support for my friend. my friend would like to talk to some one who has been in her postion and manage to make a new begining of a good and peaceful life, with support and guidance of a charity or organisation.

Accommodation for Polish Candidates new to the UK
I run a company called BritBound - my role is to assist employers recruiting employees from overseas countries. In short we arrange accommodation, bank accounts, NI numbers and provide a wide range of services and advice to ensure those new to the UK settle in quickly, comfortably and above all make the most of their time here in the UK.
The reason we are needing help is that we have just been asked by a major UK retailer to assist with the arrival and integration of 200 Polish candidates into areas around the UK.
I need some advice for links to accommodation - I am able to find some short-term accommdoation such as hostels but my concern is how to help the candidates move into long term accommodation. Any links / suggestions to good accommodation both short and long term would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you all....!
