| Sunday, 13 October, 2002, 16:50 GMT 17:50 UK Mathieu triumphs on home soil ![]() Mathieu won his first title in Moscow last week Home favourite Paul-Henri Mathieu beat Gustavo Kuerten 4-6 6-3 6-1 to win the Lyon Grand Prix and claim his second title in two weeks. Mathieu became the first qualifier to win on the Tour this year with victory in the Kremlin Cup last week. And he followed it up with a fine win over former world number one Kuerten. Kuerten, still on the comeback trail after recovering from injury, was unable to press home his advantage after taking the first set.
The Brazilian had taken his first title of the year in Salvador in September, but had no answer to Mathieu. Afterwards Mathieu said: "I was feeling much better today than on Saturday. "I knew it would not be easy against Kuerten but I believed in my chances. "These last two weeks I always struggled in the first sets but I knew that Kuerten had also played lots of three-setters and he was not at his best physically. "Today, it took me some time to be relaxed. But I had a last effort to make and I made it." Final result: P-H Mathieu (Fra) bt G Kuerten (Bra) |
