Melzer shocks Haas
Top seed Tommy Haas
Tommy Haas was unable to find any form

Defending champion and top seed Tommy Haas was routed 6-4 6-3 by local favourite Juergen Melzer in the second round of the CA Trophy on Thursday.

Haas, without a title this year and nursing a sore shoulder, fought to the bitter end.

But he was overwhelmed by the tenacious play of the Austrian wild card and was let down by his own serve.

The upset by Melzer, a former Wimbledon junior champion, is all the more impressive as the 21-year-old is ranked 93 places below the world number two.

Left-handed Melzer plays fifth seed Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, Swiss sixth seed Roger Federer had to work hard to reach the quarter-finals as he beat unseeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-2 6-7 6-4.

The 21-year-old Federer, aiming for his third tournament title this year, raced through the first set in impressive style.

But he struggled in the second set as Robredo found his rhythm and forced Federer into numerous errors.

Robredo took the set on a tie-break, forcing a decider which proved a fiercely contested battle, with both players running down every ball out far and wide of the court.

Federer eventually sealed victory on his fourth match point after two hours on the hardcourt.

"I knew it would be a good fight - he runs and plays very well," said Federer of his Spanish opponent.

"I'm very satisfied I won this match because I gave away a lot of points."

In Thursday's other second-round matches, Romania's Andrei Pavel unleashed a near-flawless power game to dispatch German Rainer Schuettler 6-0 6-4.

Already through to the last eight are fourth seed Carlos Moya and fifth seed Jiri Novak.
