The Belgian is likely to move to fifth in the world rankings after the win, which followed similar comebacks against Lindsay Davenport and Amelie Mauresmo in earlier rounds. She needed two hours before the Slovakian netted a forehand return to end the match. After the match, Clijsters paid tribute to her opponent. "I was a lot more nervous than it looked at the end - Hantuchova is a terrific player," she said.
Hantuchova is likely to move to a career-high ninth place in the rankings after playing in only her second-ever final. In a match filled with breaks, Clijsters claimed the most important one when she broke Hantuchova's serve to take a 5-4 lead in the final set. But Clijsters found her serve in the final game, landing four first serves to close out the match. Clijsters has a choice of the $97,000 prize money - or she can choose a new Porsche and part of the pot. Final result K Clijsters (6-Bel) bt D Hantuchova (8-Svk) |
