And the German admitted he has a battle on his hands to change his adopted nation's defensive mentality after they lost 1-0 to Denmark at Hampden Park.

The Danes went into the game fresh from a reasonable showing in the World Cup that lifted them to 12th in the world rankings, 48 places above Scotland.

But Vogts was not consoled by the narrow scoreline after a performance that justified the gap in the standings of the two nations.

"I am very disappointed with the game," he said.

"We have to change that mentality and it is not going to be easy for me."

Vogts' predecessor, Craig Brown, built a reputation for being difficult to beat with a defensive mind-set.

The German wants to change that and was frustrated with the number of that went backwards or across the park against the Danes.

He expected something more positive from a midfield that featured the creative talents of Celtic's Paul Lambert and Rangers' Barry Ferguson, united for the first time during his stewardship.

The defeat by Denmark followed four defeats for an experimental outfit that played a series of friendlies at the end of last season.

However, Vogts insisted that he could improve Scotland's fortunes during the forthcoming Euro 2008 campaign.

"This was the first match that I have played my best team and we will be one week together before playing against the Faroes, which will help," he said.

Vogts could only take three positive points from the performance.
