The only goal came 20 minutes from the end when Davids pounced on a rebound from Norwegian keeper Frode Grodaas, who had half-saved a shot from inside the box from Andy van der Meide. Robbie Keane scored and went on to inspire the Republic of Ireland to a confidence-boosting success over Finland in Helsinki. But striker Ali Zitouni equalised for Tunisia, heading home a cross from Mourad Melki in the 38th minute. And it could have been worse for Santini's men as Tunisia overran them in the second half and narrowly missed two clear-cut chances. Ebbe Sand's goal gave Denmark an ultimately comfortable victory over Scotland at Hampden Park. An excellent solo goal from Sebastjan Cimirotic in Trieste gave new Slovenia coach Bojan Prasnikar a surprise victory over Italy in his first game since taking over from Srecko Katanec. The game was stopped three times due to crowd trouble, twice in the first half as Slovenian fans threw smoke bombs and again in the 67th minute when a visiting supporter ran across the field.
Germany had to settle for a draw, 2-2 with Bulgaria in Sofia in their first international workout since losing the World Cup final to Brazil seven weeks ago. The home side took the lead after 21 minutes through Dimitar Berbatov, but the Germans soon levelled when Michael Ballack converted a penalty after a foul on Miroslav Klose. Bulgaria regained the lead with a Krasimir Balakov penalty after the interval. But it was all-square again after 56 minutes when a Bernd Schneider corner on the right took a huge deflection off Carsten Jancker to fox Zdravko Zdravkov. Simon Davies scored an early goal but a blunder by Wales goalkeeper Paul Jones cost Mark Hughes's men victory against Croatia in Varazdin. Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored an injury-time equaliser to earn his country a 1-1 draw in Moscow, spoiling what would have been a winning start for new Russia coach Valery Gazzayev. Zenit St Petersburg striker Alexander Kerzhakov, the Russian league's leading scorer this season, had put the hosts ahead in the 56th minute. Northern Ireland captain Neil Lennon's withdrawal overshadowed events on the field in Belfast as his team-mates put in a muted display against Cyprus . In a game between two more teams with new coaches, Zbigniew Boniek's Poland drew 1-1 with Aime Anthuenis's Belgium in Szczecin. Maciej Zurawski put the Poles ahead in the sixth minute of after Geert De Vlieger failed to gather Kamil Kosowski's cross. Wesley Sonk equalised for Belgium three minutes before half-time. World Cup semi-finalists Turkey gave 20 players an international workout in their 3-0 victory over Georgia in Trabzon. Arif Erdem opened the scoring after eight minutes from a free-kick while Cihan Haspolatli and Nihat Kahveci made the game safe after half-time.
First-half goals from Werder Bremen defender Mladen Krstajic and Real Sociedad striker Darko Kovacevic earned Yugoslavia a 2-0 win away to Bosnia in a friendly played under heavy security in Sarajevo. Ali Daei scored a shock 56th-minute winner for Iran against Ukraine in front of 18,000 spectators in Kiev. On the other side of the world, Nelson Cuevas scored in the 28th minute as Paraguay beat World Cup winners Brazil 1-0 in an exhibition game in Fortaleza. It was not what was expected in coach "Big Phil" Scolari's final game as he retired after leading Brazil to World Cup success. |
