Springboks name training squads
South Africa coach Rudolf Straeuli
Straeuli will name his final 26 at the end of October
South Africa coach Rudolf Straeuli has announced three national training squads in preparation for their Test tour of France, Scotland and England in November.

The coach named three squads of 23 to 26 players and plans to hold sessions on each of the first three Mondays in October.

He is hoping the format will allow him to work with around 45-50 players each week and also aid the four Super 12 regions.

"We have introduced an exciting youth element while not ignoring the claims of older players who are performing every weekend," Straeuli said.

But there was no place in the squads for under-21 stars Jean de Villiers, Fourie du Preez, Enrico Januarie, Pedri Wannenberg and Roland Bernard.

Veterans like Andre Venter and Rassie Erasmus were rewarded for their Currie Cup form by being included, but Straeuli pointed out there was still hope for any players who missed out.

"I want to stress that if a player is not in any of these squads he may still force his way into the final Springbok squad of 26," he said. "The door is closed to no-one.

"I want the players to know that they can press for inclusion right up until the final whistle of the (Currie Cup) final."

The Springbok squad of 26 to go on the tour will be selected following the 26 October final.

South Africa will play France on 9 November in Marseille, Scotland a week later in Murrayfield and England on 23 November at Twickenham.
