Former Wallaby captain Nick Farr-Jones has called on world rugby officials to scrap the proposed inter-hemisphere clash.

A north-south clash has been set up by the International Rugby Board for 30 November.

But Farr-Jones, who led Australia 36 times before retiring in 1994, wants the IRB to pull the plug.

"I don't really see the value of a northern/southern-hemisphere clash," he told BBC Sport Online.

The IRB set the date for the one-off clash this week, which is aimed to raise money for developing rugby countries.

And Farr-Jones added: "I've always tried to promote things for charities and good causes if I think they're a good idea.

"But the players don't even seem to want it so what's the point.

"I don't think it'll be the mouth-watering clash everyone is after."

The 40-year-old believes the rugby calendar is already too congested and that players should concentrate on internationals rather than "this meaningless clash".

Premiership opposition

"Playing for your country should be enough and that's where the focus should be," he said.

"I'd prefer to see a gold jersey clashing with a black jersey or watch the blue of France take on the white of England."

The IRB has already faced serious opposition from all quarters since tabling the match.

Premier Rugby, which represent England's 12 top-flight clubs, has already refused to release any Premiership players for the match.

The International Rugby Players Association, a body representing players in England, France and the three major southern hemisphere nations, is also against the fixture because of the congested rugby calendar.

And New Zealand coach John Mitchell has called on his players to boycott the match.
