The 23-year-old from Limerick has had to stand down because of a shoulder injury. O'Connell injured his shoulder in the narrow 15-6 defeat in the first Test at Dunedin and broke down during a fitness test on Thursday morning. He will be replaced by Lions lock Malcolm O'Kelly, who will win his 40th cap. O'Kelly had been overlooked by both O'Connell and Ulster's in-form Gary Longwell in the engine room following problems with shin splints in the run-up to the tour. O'Kelly's Leinster second row partner Leo Cullen has been promoted to the replacements bench for the first time at international level. Alan Quinlan, who injured a knee in Ireland's 56-3 first tour game win over New Zealand Divisional XV returns to the bench for Saturday's game. The Ireland replacements are: Shane Byrne, Paul Wallace, Leo Cullen, Alan Quinlan, Guy Easterby, David Humphreys, Mel Deane. |
