All Blacks name squad
Reuben Thorne tackles Scotland's Stuart Grimes

Fifteen members of the Super 12 champions Canterbury Crusaders were among the players named on Monday in the All Black squad for the 2002 international season.

The number of Crusaders players in the squad comes as no surprise following their unbeaten run in the Super 12 competition.

Crusaders captain Reuben Thorne was named as the All Blacks skipper in the absence of injured Anton Oliver.

Oliver will miss the home series against Italy, Ireland and Fiji, and the Tri-Nations home and away clashes against Australia and South Africa.

All Blacks coach John Mitchell said Thorne had enjoyed a good Super 12 season and led by example.

He said: "He is well respected by his peers and has grown enormously in certain parts of his game."

Mitchell added that he was "spoilt for choice" in the leadership of the side.

Mitchell has included three specialist wingers, including Crusaders' Caleb Ralph.

Wellington full-back Christian Cullen, who missed last year's tour to Scotland, Ireland and Argentina, returns to the party.

Wing Jonah Lomu was also named in the squad, reducing his chances of appearing in the Commonwealth Games sevens tournament.

Mitchell's initial selection is likely to go forward to the Tri-Nations series, the dates of which clash with the Manchester Games.

Lomu will only be available for sevens if he is dropped from the senior squad.

Otago Highlanders prop Joe McDonnell is the only newcomer in the team.

Mitchell said he wants to develop a pool of players to be ready for the World Cup in October 2003.

"I want players who are prepared to challenge themselves and each other in the build-up," he said.

The 26-man squad will be cut to 22 to prepare for the first game of the season, against Italy in Hamilton on 8 June.
