Welsh clubs 'close to a compromise'
Pontypridd chief executive Gareth Thomas says the Premier clubs want a speedy resolution to the restructuring debate.

The Premier clubs cancelled Thursday's meeting with Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive David Moffett after failing to a agree on their proposal for a new order.

Moffett is still waiting for a proposal from the clubs
Moffett has proposed a four province system for next season, while the nine clubs want to create five superclubs to play in European and Celtic competition.

But in-fighting between the clubs mean they still cannot decide on which five should be chosen.

"We haven't been able to reach an agreement so we saw no point in meeting for the sake of it," said Thomas.

"Hopefully when we do get together next week, we'll have resolved a lot of issues that are outstanding and go forward with some positive and constructive proposals."

As well as deciding upon which clubs should merge with who, the whole financial aspect remains unresolved.

"It's very difficult," Thomas admitted. "We're not that far away oddly enough, but as always the devil is in the detail.

"There are nine clubs with different views and we're trying to get a sensible compromise solution.

I don't think anyone wants to go into next season based on the existing structure

"It is proving a bit difficult, but we're pretty optimistic we'll get there eventually."

Moffett will meet with the WRU general committee on Thursday and will take their guidance on how to proceed.

But he is aware that time is running out, and he still wants to get the changes in place for next season.

If the clubs keep saying no to his plans, then he admitted the WRU may take a persuasive case to the 239 member clubs sooner rather than later - and let them decide this matter once and for all.

Thomas hopes it will not come to that.

He said: "I don't think anyone wants to go into next season based on the existing structure.

"But it's important we get it right."
