| Tuesday, 10 December, 2002, 13:02 GMT Clubs reject Moffett's proposal ![]() The WRU have set the lead with reform proposals The Welsh Premiership rugby clubs have rejected the WRU's provincial proposal after a two-hour meeting in Bridgend Rugby Club on Tuesday. The clubs had planned to put together an alternative plan to take to a meeting with the WRU on Thursday.
The WRU last week set out a blueprint for four regional teams, including one based in north Wales.
"We will discuss the steps needed to create five regional sides, based in south Wales, from the existing clubs. "All the clubs agree that a new structure is essential and urgent." The clubs seem to agree that five 'superclubs' would be preferable, but appear divided on who merges with who. There are two plans which the clubs have been arguing over. The first sees Pontypridd standing alone, the second Llanelli. Option 1: Option 2: In each case Cardiff would merge with nearby minnows Caerphilly, whilst Newport's proposed merger with Ebbw Vale would also be seen as more of a takeover by the larger club. The major problem with option two is thought to be the attitude of Neath, who do not wish to join forces with Swansea. |
