Smith wins second accolade
The 2002 Super League Dream Team line up
Nine British players made the 2002 dream team

Castleford's Michael Smith has followed up his shock New Zealand selection by making the 2002 Tetley's Super League Dream Team.

The 26-year-old was playing in the Northern Ford Premiership with York just two years ago.

But on Saturday he was named in the squad for New Zealand's end-of-season tour to Britain and France.

And he completed his meteoric rise on Tuesday with his selection for the Super League Dream Team.

The blockbusting Kiwi, who played rugby union until he was 20, has been in sensational form in his second spell with the Tigers and played a key role in their top-six finish.

  2002 Super League Dream Team
1. Kris Radlinski (Wigan)
2. Tevita Vaikona (Bradford)
3. Keith Senior (Leeds)
4. Martin Gleeson (St Helens)
5. Darren Albert (St Helens)
6. Danny Orr (Castleford)
7. Adrian Lam (Wigan)
8. Terry O'Connor (Wigan)
9. Keiron Cunningham (St Helens)
10. Stuart Fielden (Bradford)
11. Michael Smith (Castleford)
12. Jamie Peacock (Bradford)
13. Paul Sculthorpe (St Helens)

He is joined in the fantasy line-up by club-mate Danny Orr.

The Castleford skipper was named BBC Sport Online Rugby League Personality of the Month for August and has now been adjudged the best stand-off in Super League.

The selection - voted for by a panel of journalists and broadcasters - also provided encouragement for Great Britain ahead of the New Zealand Tests.

Home representation in the team rose to nine from six a year ago.

The Castleford duo apart, the rest of the team is made up of four St Helens players, three from Wigan, three from Bradford and one from Leeds.

Wigan's Kris Radlinksi, Adrian Lam and Terry O'Connor, Bradford's Jamie Peacock and Saints duo Keiron Cunningham and Paul Sculthorpe have all kept their places from the 2001 team.

But Wigan and Great Britain captain Andrew Farrell failed to make the line-up for just the second time in six years.
