Schofield calls for Aussie ban
David Waite talks to Paul Sculthorpe after Great Britain's loss to Australia

Former Great Britain captain Garry Schofield has called for a ban on Australian players in the Tetley's Super League.

The ex-Leeds star told the BBC's Super League Show that it gave him no pleasure to be proved right by the final score when Australia beat Great Britain 64-10 on Friday.

"We should implement an international ban," he said.

"When British players were going out to Australia in the 70s, the Australians had an international ban, because they weren't developing their own youngsters.

It's a crazy situation that the British stand-off doesn't always play in that position for his club
Garry Schofield

"That's what's been happening here. There are too many average Australians coming over at the end of their career to make easy money.

"They are keeping out youngsters in the British game, who aren't getting the opportunity to play intense rugby league, week in week out.

"It's a crazy situation that the British stand-off doesn't always play in that position for his club. And the loss of scrum-half Sean Long had coach David Waite scrabbling around for a replacement."

Schofield added: "The game as a whole needs to involve ex-players who have had experience of playing at the highest level.

"People like myself, Andy Gregory, Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards, Lee Crooks, David Hobbs to name just a few.

"We have got an input into our game and we don't get asked because people brand us as being out of touch."

Friday's result will be a wake up call for people in British rugby
Garry Schofield

Speaking about the debacle in Sydney, Schofield said: "The fixture wasn't right for the Great Britain team.

"It wasn't right to go there with only five days preparation, and it was always going to be humiliating and embarrassing.

"As for David Waite, I think the authorities should be considering his position very carefully. I think he should go."

Schofield was criticised before the game for suggesting that the Lions had no chance in Sydney.

He hit back on Sunday's Super League Show, saying: "I was asked my opinion and I gave it.

"There are too many people who think everything in our game is rosy, Friday's result will be a wake up call for people in British rugby league."
