NRL leaders Canterbury recorded their 14th straight win by surviving St George Illawarra's fightback.

The Bulldogs led 28-6 early in the second half but hung on for a 28-26 victory thanks to tries from Luke Patten, Willie Talau, Braith Anasta, Glen Hughes and Jamie Feeney.

Amos Roberts, Lee Hookey, Matt Cooper, Luke Bailey and Brent Kite touched down for the Dragons.

Brett Kimmorley's drop goal proved crucial as Cronulla scored a 25-24 win at Parramatta.

The Sharks scored five tries and led 25-18 with four minutes remaining when Brad Drew scored a 90m solo touchdown to reduce the margin to one point.

The Canberra Raiders stayed in the hunt for a top-eight spot by defeating a weakened Newcastle.

The Knights, who went into the match without Test hooker Danny Buderus and prop Josh Perry, trailed 17-12 at the break before eventually losing 30-24.

Canberra had the gloss taken off their win with the news that full-back Clinton Schifcofske has suffered a suspected broken leg.

Owen Craigie was the architect of South Sydney's 38-24 win at Wests Tigers.

The stand-off scored one try, set up several others and kicked five goals to finish with a 14-point haul.

On Saturday, Brisbane kept themselves in contention by recording a comfortable 38-20 win at Penrith.

The Broncos rested Gorden Tallis and Shane Webcke following their Test exertions but still ran in seven tries to move into second spot in the table.

Winger Chris Walker, who signed a three-year deal with South Sydney in midweek, grabbed three of them, with Michael De Vere, Allan Langer, Bradley Meyers and Darren Lockyer also crossing the line.

Sydney Roosters suffered their heaviest defeat of the season as Melbourne Storm romped to a 48-10 success at Olympic Park.

Matt Geyer

Aaran Moule and Marcus Bai both bagged a brace of tries for the home side, who lost Matt Geyer in the second half with a broken collarbone.

"I'm really disappointed in my effort," said Roosters skipper Brad Fittler.

"I don't know what I was doing out there and I'm sure the other players are disappointed with what they did. It was quite embarrassing actually."

The Northern Eagles kept themselves in the hunt for a semi-final spot with a 28-12 win over the North Queensland Cowboys.

The Eagles trailed 6-4 at the break but hit back with four second-half tries.
