St Helens coach Ian Millward could be set to leave Knowsley Road to become the new head coach at Australian club Wests Tigers.

Millward is one of 15 candidates in the running for the vacant post and, despite his recent assurances that he would stay with Saints, he is among the hot favourites to take over at the Sydney-based club.

I've still another year to run on my contract and the club have been good to me
Ian Millward

He was interviewed for the job via a satellite link earlier this week and will discover early next week whether he is to be offered the post.

"It's not the first time I've spoken with other clubs and each time I've decided to stay with St Helens," said Millward. "But I've got a lot to consider - not least my family."

Millward has been attracting the attention of his native Australian clubs after proving his coaching qualities in the Super League.

After transforming the fortunes of NFP side Leigh, he switched to St Helens to take over a club low on morale following the departure of Ellery Hanley.

He has led the Saints to one of the most successful periods in their history, with honours collected including the World Club Championship, Challenge Cups and Super League titles.

He has coached in Australia before, but only at reserve grade level at Illawara.

New Zealand coach Gary Freeman
Gary Freeman is also among the candidates
Fourteen of the applicants, including Millward, have been interviewed for the Wests Tigers job so far, with the 15th, Brisbane assistant coach Craig Bellamy, to be interviewed next Monday.

The whisper in Sydney is that it is now between Millward, Bellamy and New Zealand national coach Gary Freeman as to who gets the job.

Their is no guarantee that Millward would accept the role, even if it was offered to him.

But, after achieving so much in his reign at Knowsley Road, he may consider a fresh challenge back home.
