Leading 30-0 at halftime, the Red Rose county, who lost stand-in Paul Sculthorpe to injury after just two minutes, were suddenly put on the back foot by their opponents.
At one point, Yorkshire, with substitute Danny Orr in inspirational form, closed the gap to two points by scoring five tries in just 14 minutes. Matt Diskin and Karl Pratt scored two apiece, with Leeds club-mate Keith Senior grabbing the first. But just when it looked as though the home side would pull off an unlikely victory and force the game into extra-time, Lancashire hit back to score through John Stankevitch with nine minutes left.
The first came from Kris Radlinski after just four minutes. Wigan's David Hodgson thought he had levelled the scores 10 minutes later after grabbing a loose ball to touch down. But the video referee ruled that Paul Johnson had been illegally dispossessed. Halifax youngster Stuart Donlan then compounded Yorkshire's misery with a darting run inside from the touchline.
Johnson was then denied his side's third by a brilliant tackle from Wigan team-mate Hodgson. But St Helens full-back Paul Wellens, again playing at centre, made no mistake from John Stankevitch's pass soon after. Wigan hooker Terry Newton charged over after good work by the lively Paul Deacon on 36 minutes, with Johnson adding a fifth try on the stroke of half-time. Deacon completed a good half's work by converting his fifth touchdown just before the hooter sounded. Yorkshire: Horne, Calderwood, Gilmour, Senior, Hodgson, Pryce, Sheridan, Fozzard, Diskin, Farrell, Hay, Peacock, Radford. Lancashire: Radlinski, Stewart, Johnson, Wellens, Donlan, Sculthorpe, Deacon, O'Connor, Newton, McDermott, Wild, Stankevitch, Sinfield. Referee: S Ganson (St Helens). |
