Steve Nash scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the opening half as the Mavericks won 98-72 to match the franchise best for consecutive victories. They are only the 10th team in NBA history to begin the season with 11 wins. It was the sixth defeat in seven games for the defending champions, who have opened up the season 3-8 without star centre Shaquille O'Neal. Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley combined for 36 points and 32 rebounds, while Shawn Bradley chipped in with 16 points and 12 boards for the Mavs. Dallas recorded their biggest win over the Lakers despite shooting just over 40%. The Houston Rockets (1993-94) and Washington Capitols (1948-49) share the joint best starts to an NBA season at 15-0.
Kevin Garnett scored 34 points and pulled down 22 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Memphis Grizzlies 110-106 in overtime. The Grizzlies led by five points during the final quarter but were unable to hold on for their first win of the season - extending their NBA-worst record to 0-11. David Wesley scored in the last second as the New Orleans Hornets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 99-98. Allen Iverson scored a game-high 38 points, but the Sixers were unable to hand the Hornets their first home defeat of the season. Utah Jazz guard Mark Jackson passed NBA legend Oscar Robertson for third place on the NBA career assists list during their 99-76 win over the Phoenix Suns.
