| Pat Eddery Despite reaching the age of 50, Irishman Pat Eddery remains one of the leading Flat jockeys. The triple Epsom Derby winner has secured 11 champion jockey titles in his career, a record he holds with Lester Piggott. Eddery had his first success in the UK when Alvao obliged at Epsom in April 1969. Now a freelance, he has landed virtually every major Flat race in Europe.
Goodwood is a favourite track of Eddery, who has been top jockey at the July festival four times. And it was at there earlier this season that Eddery surpassed Lester Piggott's tally of 4,493 career wins to become the second most successful jockey in British history. The Sussex course has since honoured the Dublin-born jockey by making him only the fifth recipient of their lifetime achievement award. Eddery's 68 Glorious Goodwood wins include five wins in the Sussex Stakes and the Goodwood Cup and three in the Nassau Stakes. But he was unable to add to that tally at this year's meeting. |
