Woods held a three-stroke lead over Justin Leonard in the 36-hole event for the year's major champions. Davis Love III and PGA Championship winner Rich Beem both opened with a 72 in a tournament which was lacking the British Open champion Ernie Els. In the absence of the South African, Love and Leonard gained invitations based on their finishes in the majors. Woods, who is seeking his fifth consecutive victory in this competition, had a bogey-free round. The event - held at Poipu Bay Golf Course on the island of Kauai - has a less-than-serious atmosphere. This was embodied by Beem, whose golf shoes had a hula dancer airbrushed on one side and palm trees on the other. He also sported a floral aloha shirt and his driver head was painted in a colorful Hawaiian print. Nevertheless, the winner will receive $400,000 out of a total $1m purse. |
