| Sunday, 4 August, 2002, 19:28 GMT 20:28 UK Davies wins Oslo play-off ![]() Davies is on the verge of a Solheim Cup spot England's Laura Davies grabbed her 64th career title when she beat Spain's Ana Larraneta at the second extra hole in the Norwegian Masters in Oslo on Sunday. The 38-year-old, who began the day one shot clear of fellow Briton Kirsty Taylor, posted a final round one-over-par 73 to force a play-off. The players halved the 18th hole the first time round with the Spaniard making a six foot par putt to keep the match alive. At the second time of asking Davies hit a wedge to five feet and watched as Larraneta's birdie attempt from 18 feet finished agonisingly short. Davies then calmly rolled in her birdie putt to clinch her first win since the 2001 WPGA International Matchplay Championship. "I've managed to keep my record going," said Davies, who has won in each year of her career since turning professional in 1985. "I'm not a big fan of play-offs. I could have won a bit earlier, but a bogey at 17 didn't help." The victory puts Davies in good heart for the British Women's Open at Turnberry next week. It also pushes her up to eighth in the Solheim Cup standings, just one behind Sweden's Sophie Gustafson who currently occupies the last automatic qualification spot. |
