Greg Norman and Jean Van de Velde have won places in the 2002 US Open, but former champion Curtis Strange missed out after qualifying on Tuesday.

Norman, who has failed to make a cut at the event since 1996, shot a five-under 139 after 36 holes at the Old Memorial Club in Tampa, Florida.

Frenchman Van de Velde, who blew a chance to win The Open in 1999 at Carnoustie, was one of 22 players to qualify in Purchase, New York.

American Tom Byrum led the way with a five-under 138 and was joined by Jeff Maggert, Jay Haas, Craig Stadler, Bob Tway and South Korean KJ Choi.

Jeev Milkha Singh, meanwhile, became the first Indian player to qualify for the tournament.

The 30-year-old earned his place by tying for fourth at Purchase, carding steady rounds of 69 and 72.

Strange demise

Singh, who was one of 772 players to take part in this week's sectional qualifying said his golfing dream had been realised.

"I am so excited. I had always dreamt of playing the US Open and it has finally been realised today."

France's Thomas Levet was among three players who qualified in Atlanta.

Among those who failed to qualify were former PGA champion Steve Elkington of Australia and two-time US Open champion Strange, the last man to win the Open in consecutive years.

The 2002 US Open begins in Farmingdale, New York, on 13 June.
