| Fulham exit Europe ![]() Marlet looked a danger throughout for Fulham Fulham 0-0 Hertha Berlin (Hertha win 2-1 on aggregate) Fulham exited the Uefa Cup at the third round stage after being held to a goalless draw at Loftus Road by German side Hertha Berlin. Jean Tigana's side attacked from the kick-off and enjoyed plenty of opportunities to erase the German side's 2-1 advantage from the first leg. But they ran out of steam in the second half and their European journey that began in early July and lasted 14 games came to an end. It could have all been different had they taken any one of the numerous chances that fell their way in the first half. Sean Davis could have given them the perfect start in the opening minute.
The midfielder had an initial shot blocked but the ball came back to him and he fired in a second strike which Hertha keeper Gabor Kiraly juggled before grabbing at the second attempt. Alain Goma then rose well at a corner to get in a header that clipped the top of the bar. Steve Marlet combined well with Luis Boa Morte who made a good run into the box, but his shot was too close to the keeper. A minute later Boa Morte was handed an even better chance to break the deadlock.
Marlet beat the offside trap and outpaced the German defence to get to the byline before teeing the ball up for his strike partner, but he could only clip the outside of the post from close range. The lively Marlet then did well to earn himself a shot on goal but again Kiraly was able to block the shot. From the rebound Marlet's cross appeared to hit the hands of Hertha substitute Dick van Burik, but the home side had to settle for a corner. Hertha had their moments at the other end and Brazilian striker Marcelinho latched on to a mistake by Fulham defender Rufus Brevett. The forward fired in a powerful shot that Fulham keeper Maik Taylor was at full stretch to turn around for a corner.
The Brazilian then hit the post direct from a corner and long periods of domination the home side will have been pleased to hear the half-time whistle. The chances dried up after the break and Fulham had to settle largely for long range efforts. Davis broke well and fired in a shot from outside the box but it was straight at Kiraly. Pierre Wome's pace took him to the byline and he drilled in a cross, but Kiraly did well to get down and gather the ball. Fulham threw everything at the Germans in the final stages, but it was all in desperation and despite referee Pierluigi Collina adding five minutes of injury time they were unable to find the goal they needed.
