Auxerre marched into the fourth round of the Uefa Cup with a 2-0 win over Real Betis.

The young French side overcame a 1-0 loss in Seville despite late pressure from the Spanish side.

Influential midfielder Teemu Tainio put the hosts in front in the 18th minute before captain Yann Lachuer headed home a Djibrill Cisse cross three minutes after the break.

Brazilian midfielder Denilson had a good chance for Betis in the 76th minute but goalkeeper Fabien Cool saved.

Liverpool eased into the fourth round with a 1-0 win over Vitesse Arnhem, with Michael Owen grabbing the goal.

Scottish champions Celtic lost 2-1 at Celta Vigo but Martin O'Neill's side went through to the fourth round on away goals.

But the news was not so good for Leeds manager Terry Venables who saw his side exit after losing 2-1 at home to Malaga.

Hertha Berlin booked their place in the fourth round after ending the first foray into Europe for Fulham with a 0-0 draw after having won 2-1 in Germany.

Lazio went through 3-2 on aggregate despite an embarrassing 1-0 loss to Sturm Graz.

Hungarian Imre Szabics scoring an 87th-minute winner against a Lazio side without most of their stars ahead of their Italian league match against Juventus at the weekend.

Aside from Auxerre's success, it was a grim night for French clubs with champions Olympique Lyon, Lens , Paris St Germain and Bordeaux all being knocked out.

The 100th European match Lyon's history ended in a 1-0 defeat at home to mid-table Turkish side Denizlispor.

Mustafa Ozkan volleyed the winner just five minutes into the game after the French club had earned a goalless draw away from home.

Bordeaux earned a 2-2 draw at Anderlecht but paid the price for a 2-0 defeat in Belgium.

Lens were similarly condemned by their 3-0 first-leg defeat to Porto despite a 1-0 win on the night, while Boavista's 1-0 win at home to PSG saw them through on away goals.
