Teddy Sheringham has told BBC Sport that he has not yet discussed a new contract with Tottenham.

Sheringham was reported to have been offered a new one-year deal with the north London club.

But Spurs insisted no deal had been struck and Sheringham has confirmed that negotiations have not even begun.

"Nothing has been discussed," he told this website.

"We won't be talking about a new contract until March."

The former England striker, 36, is keen to remain with the north London side after his contract runs out in June.

Midfielder Darren Anderton has also signalled his interest in signing a new contract despite having nearly 18 months left on his current deal.

But a club spokesman said: "David Pleat, our director of football, has already written in a recent match programme that new contract negotiations must now wait until the end of the season.

"That situation includes both Teddy and Darren."

Hoddle has succeeded in trimming his wage bill by offloading Les Ferdinand and Sergei Rebrov.

But it has left him short on striking options and he is said to be keen to keep hold of the Sheringham, the former Millwall, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United striker.

Spurs also have been linked with a move for 33-year-old forward Alen Boksic in the last few days.

If Sheringham does extend his time at Spurs he would still not be the Premiership's oldest senior citizen.

West Ham defender Nigel Winterburn and Arsenal keeper David Seaman are 39, while Manchester City's Peter Schmeichel is also approaching 40.
