Spurs trial for World Cup striker
Qu Bo in action against Turkey at the 2002 World Cup
Bo played a part in China's World Cup campaign
China's World Cup striker Qu Bo has joined Tottenham Hotspur for a 10-day trial period.

Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle has made no secret of his desire to land a new centre-forward before the season starts and director of football David Pleat believes Bo could fit the bill.

The 21-year-old arrived at the Premiership club's training ground on Monday and is likely to get his chance to impress in friendly matches against Crystal Palace and Watford.

Pleat - who noticed Bo while working as a television commentator at the World Cup - said: "He's here for a few days for us to have a look at him (but) it's not easy, there is a lot of red tape.

"He's been living in a country many miles away with a different type of football machinery to ourselves but, the bottom line is, he played for China in the World Cup and showed something to me which was a little bit different.

"When he impressed me in the World Cup I immediately went to speak to various Chinese people and asked them about the boy's past history and what they thought his strengths were."

Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle
Hoddle will have the final say on Bo

Pleat admitted, though, that manager Hoddle would have the final decision on whether to sign Bo.

"If Glenn thinks he's first team material we'll take it further. He's got to be tested because it's not good enough to be just another player, he's got to be of first team standard.

"If he's not, it will have been an experience for him and an interesting exercise for us."

Pleat added: "I think, for his age and the abilities he's got, and the abilities we haven't got in terms of pace and striking power that this is the one for Glenn to have a look at."
