Saints launch Svensson appeal
Southampton's Michael Svensson is appealing against the red card he received at Spiurs
Svensson is shown the red card at Spurs
Southamton boss Gordon Strachan has appealed to the FA to over-turn the red card handed to defender Michael Svensson in the defeat at Spurs.

Referee Mike Dean sent off Svensson in the last minute of the 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane for the deliberate handball that led to Teddy Sheringham's winner from the penalty spot.

But Strachan said: "Anyone who has eyes and who saw the incident knows he did not do it on purpose."

If the suspension stands, Svensson will miss the game at West Bromwich Albion on 14 September.

Strachan added: "If the referee admits it was accidental, he will have to accept that he should not have given the penalty that led to our defeat.

"So I'm not holding my breath. It would take a brave referee to admit that.

"I wouldn't fine him for something that couldn't be avoided. If referees are going to ban for that I might as well send my players out with their hands tied behind their backs."
