The Deepdale club signed the American international from Fulham following a protracted transfer.

But the move hit trouble when Lewis's application for a work permit was rejected.

His move was given the all clear on Wednesday, to the delight of Preston boss Craig Brown.

Brown told the club's official website: "The panel commented favourably on the quality and presentation of the written submission produced by Eddie.

"The panel was impressed with the work done by Eddie and Janet now we can look forward to introducing Eddie into our already talented group of players."

Lewis was part of the USA team which reached the quarter-finals of the recent World Cup.
