Barthez boost for Man Utd
Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez
Barthez has been suffering with a hip problem
Manchester United could welcome back goalkeeper Fabien Barthez for next week's crucial Champions League showdown with Zalaegerszeg at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson has turned to Roy Carroll in the absence of Barthez who sustained a hip injury during a pre-season match in Amsterdam three weeks ago.

The Frenchman missed United's shock 1-0 first-leg reverse in Hungary as well as the opening game of the new Premiership season, when West Brom were beaten 1-0 at Old Trafford.

And while Ferguson revealed Barthez will not feature against Chelsea on Friday, the World Cup winner could play in the return against the Hungarians.

Ferguson told the Manchester Evening News: "Fabien won't be fit for Friday at Chelsea, but maybe okay for Tuesday against Zalaegerszeg.

"He is doing his training and we are quite hopeful."

United have been looking to sign an experienced goalkeeping understudy to Barthez after losing three keepers in the summer.

Raimond van der Gouw, Paul Rachubka and Nick Culkin have all moved elsewhere.

The club have been linked with Juventus' Fabian Carini and Brazilian World Cup winner Marcos.
