Duo staying at Anfield
Litmanen has failed to become an Anfield regular
Litmanen has failed to become an Anfield regular
Jari Litmanen and Patrick Berger have both turned down the chance to leave the Premiership club before the 31 August transfer deadline.

Litmanen had been given permission to talk to Turkish club Galatasaray.

The Finland international is not a regular in Gerrard Houllier's starting line up and has been pushed further down the pecking order by the arrival of Senegal star El Hadji Diouf.

But the 31-year-old's agent has said that his player will stay at Anfield - and see out the final year of his contract.

"All I can say is that Jari is staying at Liverpool," his agent Harri Kampman told the Times newspaper. "He won't go to Turkey."

Berger also has one year left on his current deal and has been offered an extension to his contract.

But he, like Litmanen, is a fringe player at Liverpool at a time when Houllier is looking to trim the club's hefty wage bill.

However, despite interest from Celtic and Sunderland, Berger is also intent on staying at Anfield.

And the Czech Republic international will wait until the New Year - when he is allowed to negotiate a free transfer with other clubs - before considering leaving.

"I will not go anywhere before the deadline," said Berger.

"On 1 January, if the situation is still the same, I will think about moving."

Liverpool recently released Nick Barmby to Leeds and Stephen Wright to Sunderland.
